2017 Pakistan-Turkey Military Dialogue Group begins
The 12th Pakistan-Turkey Military Dialogue Group began on Wednesday, 25 January 2017. The two-day engagement is led by Pakistan’s Secretary Defence Syed Zamir ul-Hassan Shah and Turkey’s Deputy Chief of Turkish General Staff General Umit Dundar.
The Associated Press of Pakistan reports that the two sides committed to the “mutual cooperation in [the] defence arena covering defence industries, training of armed forces personnel … exchange of visits … and frequent interaction between the [respective] armed forces.”
Notes & Comments:
Turkey has emerged as one of Pakistan’s leading defence suppliers, effectively its largest after China and the United States. This was exemplified in June 2016 when the Pakistan Navy awarded the Turkish defence contractor Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş. (STM) a USD $350 million contract to upgrade its three Khalid-class Agosta 90B air-independent propulsion (AIP)-powered submarines. In turn, Aselsan and Havelsan were awarded subsystem contracts in support of this upgrade program.
Pakistan is also in talks for four MILGEM surface warships, which STM hopes to conclude in 2017 in tandem with other defence programs. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is also hopeful of selling T-129 attack helicopters to the Pakistan Army, thus building upon its earlier (and concluded) program of upgrading the Pakistan Air Force (PAF)’s fleet of Peace Gate F-16A/B Block-15s. Aselsan also sold 16 ASELPOD advanced targeting pods to the PAF for use on the JF-17 multi-role fighter. Aselsan is also hoping to expand its work in Pakistan by engaging with the Pakistan Army and Heavy Industries Taxila in the al-Khalid tank program.
While Turkey is Pakistan’s third major supplier, it is second only to China in terms of being Pakistan’s key defence partner. Besides armament sales, Turkey has also engaged Pakistan in other fronts, such as joint-exercises – including marquee air exercises such as Anatolian Eagle – and training programs. Arms sales notwithstanding, the broader partnership has grown and thus, meetings such as this Dialogue Group are of significance. Arguably, the next step would be bilateral defence development cooperation, though it is not yet known how this would materialize.

Turkey’s Altay MBT project hit by engine technology transfer issues ,Austria’s parliament unanimously adopted a non-binding motion that imposed an arms embargo against Turkey in November 2016. As a result conditions were placed on the transfer of technology to Turkey. Austria made the move in response to Turkey’s increasing violation of human rights since the failed military coup attempt in July 2016.

Almost all Turkish project are either TOT or involve license manufacture of many European components which they have access to since being a part of NATO but we should not buy from Turkey unless they guarantee us full spares supply in case of international sanctions or any in geopolitical eventuality until then I think china is the way to go since only they can provide us with any weapons system without any danger of spare supply shortage or embargo.

They would benefit from shifting to the Ukrainian engine, which will come with less conditions. A reliable source has become an extremely important aspect of arms procurement in recent years, and this problem will only spur Turkey to further develop its pwn industry, like Pakistan did with the JF-17.

The first batch of Altay’s already have their engines. In fact, 300 MTU engines are already stored at MTU Turkey warehouses awaiting installation in the first batch of Altay’s. The argument about TUMOSAN not being able to obtain ToT from AVL List GmbH of Austria is in relation to Turkish plans for an indigenous engine which it could use in export versions of the Altay without the need for end-user certificates. Currently MTU has not been able to obtain permission for its engine to be used in Turkey’s export version of the Altay. Turkey wants full intellectual property rights in respect of its indigenous products so that it can export them without any restrictions to friendly countries such as Azerbaijan and Pakistan.

Even if they do most of it is kit based assembly they have little to no knowledge or tech to make products from scratch or raw materials they don’t even manufacture the silicone chips or AESS radar TIMMs which they procure from EADS or other western vendor.
Besides all this is a moot point they are a NATO member and have been begging the EU to get in the Europe I don’t think they will defy the west for Pakistan historically they have not supported Pakistan in the struggles except just empty words this Ummah crap needs to die there are only geopolitical interest and only china has the courage power and ability to defy west ,NATO and US to support Pakistan.
Also china which produces everything inhouse from the raw materials only they have the full capability to produce everything from raw materials without fear of Western sanctions.

Turkey must not buy from Pakistan and Pakistan from Turkey…They must co-design, co-produce for the best interests of both sides..Helping to each other and sharing all what they have in hand..
