Roketsan Temren anti-ship missile will arm Turkish Seahawks
The Government of Turkey has decided to arm the Turkish Navy’s SH-60 Seahawk helicopters with Roketsan’s new short-range anti-ship missile (AShM), the Temren (C4 Defence).
The Temren was developed using the UMTAS anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) platform. The currently available iteration of the UMTAS is a semi-active laser-guided missile with a range of 8 km.
Roketsan test-fired the UMTAS from the SH-60 in late 2014 or early 2015 and it is currently in the process of developing a longer-range variant with an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, imbuing it with ‘fire-and-forget’ capabilities.
Notes & Comments:
Although Roketsan may be aiming to bring the UMTAS Temren line’s range into the area of the Penguin, it is not clear if the missile is being developed to serve the exact same function. Although a short-range AShM, the Penguin does possess a much heavier warhead – at 120-130 kg – than the UMTAS, which was designed as a Hellfire II-like ATGM.
