DRDO hands over first LRSAM to Indian Ministry of Defence
On Tuesday August 29, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) delivered the first batch of Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) systems to India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Collaboratively developed with Israel’s ELTA Systems and Rafael, the LRSAM – also known as the Barak-8 – will be the principal anti-air warfare (AAW) system of Indian Navy frigates and destroyers. In December 2015, the INS Kolkata had test-fired the Barak-8 from its vertical launch system (VLS) silos.
The LRSAM/Barak-8 has a range of over 90 km (IHS Jane’s). The missile utilizes an terminal-stage active radar-seeker with an radar-supported inertial navigation system (INS). The LRSAM’s standard guidance radar is the ELTA Systems’ S-band EL/M-2248 Multi-Function Surveillance, Track and Guidance Radar (MF-STAR) active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar, which can track targets at up to 250 km.
New Delhi and Tel Aviv had signed onto developing the LRSAM/Barak-8 – previously known as Barak-NG – in 2006. It was envisaged as a joint-program between DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which brought in its subsidiary ELTA Systems and Israeli munitions partner Rafael. The two sides then signed an agreement to co-develop a land-based variant, the medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) in 2007.
In May, IAI signed a $630 million U.S. contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to jointly produce and supply four LRSAM systems to the Indian Navy. IAI and BEL had also signed a $1.6 billion contract to supply MRSAM systems to the India Army. The MRSAM reportedly has a range of over 70 km.
Broadly, the LRSAM and MRSAM speak to the depth of Indo-Israeli defence relations, which have assumed major elements of India’s modernization and development programs.
While the LRSAM/MRSAM platform is forming a key aspect – if not backbone – of India’s medium-to-long range air defence environment, ELTA Systems’ AESA radars are also sensors of choice for the Indian armed forces. The EL/M-2032, EL/M-2248 and EL/W-2090 radars are used onboard the Tejas multi-role fighter, Kolkata-class destroyer and Phalcon airborne early warning and control (AEW&C), respectively.

this is one of the best examples of high end technology collaboration between India and Israel. given the range of the missiles (its close to 100 Km in current configuration and Barak – 8ER will have 150 Km range), hit probability, will made the IN a formidable force in the region. give the plan, where all the combat ships are going to be equipped, its definitely going to create ripples across the region.
its defensive perimeters along with BrahMos offensive range of 450km it make our ships untouchable till the adversaries comes up with something better as countermeasures

It’s called CM-400AKG. It is already deployed to say hello to your ships when they try to blockade us. It’s range of 250km (current) is more than your Barak-8 bought from Israel and repainted. It’s funny how the Israelis give you the fig leaf of “joint” development with minimal Indian input. Lol.

Yes, from JF-17. It’s integrated a while back, as well as other cruise missiles except Babur.
Also, no missile defence in the world provides 100% shield. It’s a good integration on Indian ships but it does not guarantee anything.

i will answer with technical specs –
1. the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR AESA installed with our destroyers have 250+ (missile) to 400 km (for fighter) detection range. so any pakistani delivery platform will be detected 150 km ahead of them entering the delivery stage
2. CM-400AKG aka export version of Yk -12 has a big problem. its predictable ballistic trajectory. without maneuverability, Barak 8 will have enough time to wait and shot it down at time
3. the Kolkata Class destroyers currently have Barak -8, which will be upgraded to Barak -8 ER will have 150 km range and will be default version for Indian Navy’s future Visakhapatnam-class destroyers.
4. with greenpie radar in Gujarat and Rajasthan, IAF can see every PAF fighter movement deep inside pakistani territory, so no surprise for our assets …
5. last question, the delivery platform JF-17 itself will be tested well before weapon delivery by indian assets .
6.how would a JF 17 with two 900 kg bomb manage Indian carrier based plans? currently Mig 29k and very soon it will be either Rafael or F-18 or LCA

With respect, please stop talking nonsense. I’m saying that we have a weapon to threaten you with with much longer range than Barak. Janes says it’s Mach 5 and employs 3 types of terminal guidance. So good luck stopping it with Israeli weapons. You may be able to see platform approach. So? We also have 450 km radar range AWAC’s which will see your ships before you see our planes. How does that help you? We will probably employ saturation attacks that even the Americans fear, what to talk about poor Indians! You are talking of ballistic trajectory which a lot of missiles employ as if it is a game changer and it is not. You know we will deploy 250 Block-III and can easily employ saturation attack against high value targets. One hit will destroy the target and send you all in collective depression. We have IFR which allows us to avoid the Green Pine you are boasting about in a futile manner, as it will be a sea borne approach. We also have Block 52 with conformal fuel tanks for long range and AIM-120C5, well tested and proven in battle. If you are boasting about Rafale which is not even indicted, I can boast about J-31 which is also planned. Better keep your ships within range of your shore based fighters and in range of our subs lol. Do you want to bring subs into the picture as well? What about nuclear weapons…you see it never ends. What you are saying is irrelevant to the point I am making. You obviously don’t understand that, and are being argumentative as always just to try yet again to prove how great your third world country is. Lol!

Agree jigsaw! I have a problem with people talking as if they are invincible and untouchable with weapons that guarantee them superiority. Particularly since we know them and their country’s capability inside and out. War is fluid and 100’s of factors determine outcome, but we are dealing with people who don’t see that and are hyper-nervous some would say terrified of Pakistan. They need to constantly reassure themselves, hence the blah blah blah that we waste time responding to lol!

My comment got all the three legs of yours rumbling, and you could not help yourself coming down to the normal levels for you.
Barak 8 is precision defense weapon, so how it matters whether it is targeting a weapon fired from 250km or 2500km?
The speed of Mach 5 ( it’s mach 3-4 for the Chinese original version YJ-12, but guess Pakistanis can launch it faster) is for the terminal phase after IR or Visual contact. For the rest of the course its speed is between 0.7 to 0.9 mach. So bubble bust.
Saturation attack?. Please don’t blabber those words. Chinese have the number to think about it atleast.
I was talking about ballistic trajectory of CM 400, which makes its path easy to predict for counter measures.
Lastly, very keen on knowing what IFR technology PAF has to avoid one of the longest range AESA radar.
And on the naval blockage, we will not dock our ships off the coast of karachi to squeeze you

The 910kg/2,000lb CM-400AKG, possessing a claimed engagement envelope of
240km (130nm) a maximum cruise speed of Mach 4, airframe diameter of 0.4 metres,
and 200kg blast-penetration warhead, has apparently been designed to be launched
when the JF-17 reaches cruise speeds of between 750kph and 800kph at altitudes
of between 26,200 feet and 39,400 feet. While its on-board RLG-INS offers a CEP of
50 metres (164 feet) during the mid-course navigation phase, the CEP reportedly gets
reduced to 5 metres when the IIR seeker is activated during the terminal guidance
phase.

Barak-1 CIWS, which will in future be supplemented by the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR/Barak-2
LR-SAM combination, along with IAI/ELTA Systems-supplied EL/M-2222S NAVGUARD,
which is an active phased-array radar-based missile approach warning system
(MAWS) that automatically detects, classifies and verifies incoming threats, and
consequently triggers the targetted warship’s hard-kill/soft-kill self-defence systems.

You guys don’t know when to give it a rest, and stop talking. It’s bad to stereotype people but that almost seems to be part of your national character. We often see it here in international meetings and conferences. After a long discussion on any subject, some Indian gets up and states the obvious, or repeats poorly what’s already been spoken about at length. Then sits down with a big smile as if just speaking in front of ‘white people’ is a massive achievement. He has no insight or perception of people silently exchanging looks or rolling their eyes. As people are polite they don’t ask him to STFU but he won’t ever know that. Like I said, don’t know when to stop, and keep repeating the same thing over and over, as if the 2nd or 3rd time it is somehow better, or something will change. It’s pathetic. You won’t like it as you know it’s true but I know you won’t stop. I’m getting a bit bored with all this. Lol

If it’s indigenous and low quality it’s a problem. What’s the point in getting your military killed by using low quality stuff just because it’s ‘indigenous’. Long term it’s better to make yourself but quality can’t immediately be equivalent to established companies making stuff, and it is stupid to pretend that. Gives you frustration when others don’t believe you, and if you’re immature you start shouting at them which is even more hilarious. Established countries won’t hand over critical technology though, no matter how much you beg, and then it’s the Chinese way of slow incremental development that works. JV like Pakistan does or license manufacture with increasing share of work like the Turks is also a solution. Some people import stuff and fiddle with software a bit and call it ‘indigenous’ but it fools no one.

In times to come, it will be established that Pakistan’s route of JV’s and co-production was always the right choice and gave it advanced technological know-how and result oriented platforms across industry, while some people will still be stuck on boasting how much indigenous the content is in their non-working samples and demonstrators. That will be the time when even little taunts of so-called indigenous stuff won’t matter anymore because Pakistan would have taken strides by then in self-sufficiency.
