The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) received its first SIGMA 10514 Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR)-class frigate from PT PAL on 23 January 2017.
The frigate was launched for sea trials in January 2016. The SIGMA 10514 has a length of 105 metres and displacement of 2,365 tons. It is capable of a top speed of 28 knots, a maximum range of 5,000 nautical miles at 14 knots, and endurance of 20 days.
The SIGMA 10514 is a multi-mission design capable of anti-ship warfare (AShW), anti-submarine warfare (AAW), and anti-air warfare (AAW). In November 2016, DSNS announced that it was in negotiations with prospective vendors for subsystems and weapons for Indonesia’s frigates.
As per IHS Jane’s, the PKR-class frigate is configured with a Thales SMART-S Mk2 radar, STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 radar and electro-optical tracking system, and Kingklip hull-mounted sonar. However, it thus far only armed with its single Leonardo 76/62 Super Rapid Gun. IHS Jane’s notes that the PKR-class frigates could ultimately be armed with MBDA Exocet Block-II MM40 AShM, Eurotorp B515 torpedo launchers, Rheinmetall Defence Millennium 35 mm close-in-weapon-system, and MBDA VL-MICA for AAW.
Indonesia ordered two SIGMA 10514 frigates from the Dutch naval vendor Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) in June 2012. These ships are being built in Indonesia in collaboration with Indonesia’s state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL. Under the agreement, DSNS transferred technology and expertise to PT PAL, especially in terms of improving PT PAL’s infrastructure and raising the capacity of its workers.
The second ship, Raden Eddy Martadinata, was launched for sea trials in July 2016.
Nice acquisition from Indonesia.
Also like take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to Quwa for allowing me the opportunity to discuss my two shillings worth.
May I express my solidarity with my Azad Kashmiri brother Abdul Rashid. He too comes from the same kneck of the woods as me. We live in glorious harmony with our bretheren in Pakistan.
Thank you Shakeel. Yes, I have Mirpuri blood in me. For me Pakistan is Kashmir and Kashmir is Pakistan. Regardless where we find ourselves in the world, how geographically remote we might become from our Kashmiri homeland, Pakistan evokes the same emotions in us as in any other Pakistani. The land, the Parcham-e-Sitāra-o-Hilāl, the Qaumi Taranah – we embrace it all.
